Markets
Nearby and 2023 new crop NuSun and high oleic prices at the crush plants are down 60 cents to unchanged this week. Commodity traders are closely watching developments with the Black Sea Grain Initiative. Russia announced on Saturday it would be terminating the Black Sea Grains Initiative when the agreement expires in two weeks, casting doubt on the safety and accessibility of Ukrainian grain and oilseed supplies to international markets. Grain cargoes were still sailing out of Ukraine but it’s uncertain if this will be the case in the future. Rain/snow events early last week in parts of the Dakotas and Minnesota tamped the brakes on harvest progress for a few days. Sunflower harvest progress did pick up as warm dry weather arrived mid-week. Harvest advanced 24% to 61% complete for the week ending October 30. In the past week, producers harvested an additional 370,575 acres pushing 2022 harvested acres to about 946,470 acres. Harvest progress is 16% ahead of the five-year average and slightly ahead of last year at this same time. This week the USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA) is expected to announce Harvest Prices for 2022 revenue insurance policies for sunflowers. The harvest price has risen to where it will take a yield loss to trigger a crop insurance payment. Harvest price per pound for oil-type sunflowers is 35.1 cents and confection sunflowers at 43.9 cents. Spring prices were 32.4 cents for oils and 40.5 cents for confections.
