SunOpta sells sunflower business
Private equity firm Pacific Avenue Capital Partners has purchased SunOpta Inc.’s sunflower and roasted snacks business for $16 million. The acquisition includes three of SunOpta’s facilities based in Crookston and Breckenridge, Minn., and Grace City, ND, which will now operate as Sunrich Products LLC. The transaction also includes, hybrid seed development activities, a collaborative program with independent sunflower growers, and relationships with an extensive set of customers in the food ingredients, snack food, and birdseed markets. Kent Johnson, general manager of Sunrich, will become Chief Executive Officer. Kent will be joined by the rest of Sunrich’s leadership team and employee base.

Nearby prices at the crush plants are down 80 cents to unchanged this week. The ADM Enderlin crush plant has rolled out its 2023 new crop cash and Act of God (AOG) contracts. NuSun cash is $25.75 and $25.25 AOG. High oleics are $26.75 cash and $26.25 AOG. Something else to consider is the oil premiums that crush plants pay on sunflower. Sunflower is the only oilseed that pays premiums for oil content above 40%. Considering oil premiums that are offered at the crush plants on oil content above 40% at a rate of 2% price premium for each 1% of oil above 40%; this pushes a contract with 45% oil content gross return 10% higher per cwt. The AOG $25.25 contract increases to $27.80, and the cash $26.75 contract moves up to $29.45. Another week of largely clear weather allowed sunflower harvest progress to advance. About 37% of sunflowers were in the bin as of last week, up from 25% seven days earlier and well ahead of the prior five-year average of 31% for this time of year, the USDA said. In the past week, producers harvested an additional 195,100 acres pushing 2022 harvested acres to about 575,895 acres. A pattern change arrived in the Northern Plains this weekend, which brought a strong system through the region Sunday and Monday with widespread moderate to heavy precipitation, strong winds, falling temperatures, and chances for accumulating snow. All of these factors will delay the remaining harvest.

Grower Report
Bismarck, North Dakota grower Clark Coleman says he is about halfway through harvesting his sunflowers. He took a week off to take care of other things around the farm before winter sets in but is hoping to be done within the next week. He is experiencing yields of 3,100 lbs. per acre. The moisture level in his sunflowers he says are super dry. The overall quality of his sunflowers look really good.
