Markets
Nearby NuSun and high oleic prices at the crush plants were down 50 cents to unchanged this week. 2023 new crop was unchanged. Very favorable weather conditions in the past week allowed sunflower producers to make good harvest progress. Harvest progress advanced 22% to 83% complete for the week ending November 6. In the past week, producers harvested an additional 329,395 acres pushing 2022 harvested acres to about 1,275,865 acres. Harvest progress is 22% ahead of the five-year average. Last year at this same time about 68% of sunflower acres were harvested. Per Oil World, global sunflower production for 2022/23 is forecast to decline by 4.0 million metric tons (MMT) to 54.0 MMT. Decreased production in the European Union and Ukraine are mostly responsible for the decrease. The U.S., Russia, Argentina, and Turkey are expected to have increased production. If realized, the decline in production will result in a seed stocks to use ratio of 10.5%, a decrease of 22% from last year. Oil World projects global sunflower oil exports to grow slightly by 0.8 MMT from last market year, reaching 12.3 MMT with Ukrainian sun oil exports declining to a multiyear low of 4.3 MMT. In the near term, U.S. harvest progress, yield and crop quality will continue to be key to prices going forward. Commodity traders will also be closely monitoring developments with the Black Sea Grain Initiative.
