Markets
Nearby prices at the crush plants were unchanged this week. USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA) Harvest Prices for 2023 revenue insurance policies for sunflowers are out. The harvest price has fallen to where a yield loss or a combination of yield and price could lead to a crop insurance payment this year for some producers. The harvest price per pound for oil-type sunflowers is 27.9 cents with confection sunflowers at 29.9 cents. Spring prices were 30.5 cents for oils and 32.6 cents for confections. It is best to check with your crop insurance agent to see if you are entitled to an indemnity check on this year’s sunflower crop. Sunflower harvest progress was slow after the recent snowstorm but advanced 20% to 50% complete for the week ending November 5. In the past week, producers harvested an additional 185,850 acres pushing 2023 harvested acres to about 362,450 acres. Harvest progress is 16% behind the five-year average and slightly behind last year at this same time. Harvest progress is expected to be slow as it may take a while for fields to dry out in the Dakotas and Minnesota. The heavy snow that fell across the Northern Plains continues to be slow to melt and is keeping temperatures low. The weather conditions in the Northern Plains are expected to change to a warmer than normal and drier than normal pattern later in the week. These conditions should allow the remaining harvest to move forward.

Grower Report
Kennedy, Minnesota grower Tom Dowdle was hoping to start harvesting his sunflowers last week until he received 8-9 inches of snow the previous week. When they checked before the snow hit the heads were just about dry. The temperature is supposed to get up in the 40’s to hopefully melt the snow on the heads, but more rain/snow is in the forecast this week.  He is confident that he will eventually get his sunflowers harvested but his 500 acres of soybeans may be a loss.
