’Getting It Right’ Sunflower Event Date Set

North Dakota State University’s Agricultural Extension Service has already set the date for its next annual ‘Getting It Right’ sunflower production Zoom conference.  The 2026 version will take place on Tuesday, January 13.  Interested parties can get more information and/or register by visiting https://www.ndsu.edu/agriculture/ag-hub/getting-it-right. That same site carries extensive coverage of the topics addressed during the 2025 ‘Getting It Right’ conference, which was supported by the National Sunflower Association. Several other resources can be found at this website as well, including the NDSU weed control, insect management and plant disease management guides.

Markets

Nearby high oleic prices at the crush plants are unchanged this week. 2026 new crop prices were unchanged as well. The sunflower harvest is getting closer to the finish line for this season. Favorable weather conditions in the past two weeks have allowed sunflower producers to make good harvest progress. Acres harvested advanced 8% to 87% complete for the week ending November 23. In the past week, producers harvested an additional 82,600 acres pushing 2025 harvested acres to about 1,035,440 acres. Last year at this same time about 92% of acres were harvested. Harvest progress remains slightly behind the five-year average of 91%. Crop quality remains very good, and yields have continued to be about average to above average in most cases. The oil content of the 2025 crop has been slightly lower than last year at this same time. Keep in mind sunflower is the only oilseed that pays premiums for oil content above 40%. Considering oil premiums that are offered at the crush plants on oil content above 40% at a rate of 2% price premium for each 1% of oil above 40%; this pushes a contract with 45% oil content gross return 10% higher per cwt. With harvest wrapping up in the Northern Hemisphere, upcoming crop production estimates and weather conditions in South America will be more important market features to watch.
