USDA to collect 2021 crop production and stocks data
As the 2021 growing season comes to an end, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will contact producers nationwide to gather final year-end crop production numbers and the amount of grain and oilseeds stored on their farms. At the same time, NASS will survey grain facility operators to determine year-end off-farm grain and oilseed stocks. Responses to the survey will be used in calculating county-level yields, which have a direct impact on farmers. USDA’s Farm Service Agency may use the data in administering producer programs and in determining disaster assistance program calculations. All responses are completely confidential. Survey results will be published in several reports, including the Crop Production Annual Summary  and the quarterly Grain Stocks report, both to be released on January 12. These and all NASS reports are available online at  www.nass.usda.gov.
Markets
2022 new crop contracts continue to roll out. Last week Red River Commodities announced it is offering new crop contracts for oils, conoils, confection and organic conoils. New crop confection and conoil contracts are also available with CHS Sunflower. Other confection processors are expected to announce new crop contracting opportunities soon if they have not already done so. Nearby sunflower prices continue to trade significantly above last year’s level and are trading 37 cents to $1.28 per cwt. higher than the 60-day moving average at the crush plants. Nearby NuSun and high oleic prices at the crush plants ended the week unchanged to up 50 cents. 2022 new crop at the crush plants continued to move higher adding an additional 15 to 50 cents. Sunflower harvest is getting closer to the finish line for this season. Very favorable weather conditions in the past week allowed sunflower producers to make good harvest progress. Harvest progress advanced 7% to 91% complete for the week ending November 21. Harvest progress remains 10% ahead of the five-year average. In the past week, producers harvested an additional 75,690 acres pushing 2021 harvested acres to about 1,037,000 acres. Crop quality remains very good, and yields have been above expectations in most cases. Harvest progress remains about equal to the five-year average. Last year at this same time 93% was in the bin.
