USDA to collect 2024 crop production and stocks data
As the 2024 growing season comes to an end, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will contact producers nationwide to gather final year-end crop production numbers and the amount of grain and oilseeds stored on their farms. At the same time, NASS will survey grain facility operators to determine year-end off-farm grain and oilseed stocks. Responses to the survey will be used in calculating county-level yields, which have a direct impact on farmers. USDA’s Farm Service Agency may use the data in administering producer programs and in determining disaster assistance program calculations. All responses are completely confidential. Survey results will be published in several reports, including the Crop Production Annual Summary and the quarterly Grain Stocks report, both to be released on January 10. These and all NASS reports are available online at www.nass.usda.gov.

Nearby high oleic prices at the crush plants were unchanged to up 20 cents in a range of $19.55-$20.00. Compared to last year, at this same time nearby prices are trading $2.80-$3.75 per cwt. higher depending on location. Overall, high oleic prices continue to trade 30 cents to $1.00 per cwt. higher than the 60-day moving average at the crush plants. 2025 new crop prices were unchanged to up 10 cents. USDA released the November World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report. USDA pegged soybean yield and total production lower than the average trade expectation. U.S. soybean supply and use changes for 2024/2025 include lower production, exports, crush, and ending stocks. Soybean production is forecast at 4.5 billion bushels, down 121 million on reduced yields. Exports are lowered 25 million bushels to 1.8 billion on lower supplies and sales to date. Crush is lowered 15 million bushels to 2.4 billion, reflecting lower soybean meal domestic disappearance and exports. Soybean ending stocks are lowered 80 million bushels to 470 million bushels. Favorable weather conditions in the past week allowed sunflower producers to make good harvest progress. Harvest progress advanced 8% to 89% complete for the week ending November 17. In the past week, producers harvested an additional 48,500 acres pushing 2024 harvested acres to about 574,000 acres. Harvest progress is 11% ahead the five-year average and 14% ahead last year at this same time.

Canada remains the top importer, importing 17,169 MT down 20% from a year ago. Mexico is the number two destination importing 3,448 MT during the period. Exports of sunflower kernel were up 10% from a year ago, from 3,163 MT to 3,500 MT from October 2023 to September 2024. Canada remains the top importer of U.S. sunflower kernel, importing 2,141 MT. In-shell exports decreased 10% from 14,220 MT to 12,750 MT from October 2023 to September 2024. Mexico was the top importer of in-shell sunflower, importing 4,843 MT with Spain a close second importing 3,225 MT during the period.
