Sunflower Oil Exports Increase
U.S. sunflower oil exports in the first seven months of the marketing year stand at 27,413 metric tons (MT) an increase of 9% from the same time a year ago. Increased demand in Canada is the leading factor to the growth in exports. Canada is the top importer of U.S. sunflower oil. From October 2021 to April 2022, Canada imported 19,376 MT of sunflower oil, compared to 14,163 MT from October 2020 to April 2021 representing a 37% increase for the same time period. Mexico is the second leading importer of U.S. sunflower oil; Mexico has imported 4,560 MT of sunflower oil so far this marketing year, which is down slightly from the same time frame a year ago.

Markets
Nearby prices were unchanged to up $1.75 setting new record highs at the crush plants this week. New crop was unchanged to up 15 cents remaining at record high levels as well. The recently released USDA supply and demand report was considered a non-event by many traders. The USDA figures were closely aligned with trade expectations and had been priced into the market. Traders will likely continue to grapple with supplies showing up on the balance sheet as the marketing year unfolds but are more concerned with logistical issues (Russia/Ukraine war and supply chain) in the near term. Sunflower producers are in the home stretch of wrapping up this year’s planting season as dry and warm weather allowed producers to make excellent planting progress in the past week. Sunflower planting continues in all states but is behind last year at this same time and the five-year average in the Dakotas and Minnesota. In the High Plains states, planting progress is also behind last year’s pace and the five-year average. As of June 19, 81% of expected 2022 sunflower acreage was in the ground, up from 62% from the week prior but behind the five-year average of 86%. On June 30, USDA will release its 2022 planted acres report and will be an important factor in determining old and new crop prices. Look for demand news and position squaring ahead of USDA’s acreage report to guide the market this week.
Reminder about stored seed
Producers who have stored seed are reminded to keep a close eye on seed moisture. Verify the seed moisture content is dry enough for storage at summer temperatures. The recommended long-term moisture contents are 8 percent for oil sunflower and 10 percent for confectionary sunflower. The market moisture content may be higher but storing warm grain at higher moisture contents may lead to mold growth. Mold growth and insect infestations occur rapidly at summer temperatures so stored grain should be checked every two weeks. Visit: Harvest & Storage Resources (sunflowernsa.com) for more information on how to safely store seed.
