2022 Research Presentations Available Online
If you were not able to attend this year’s NSA Research Forum, you can still learn about the latest sunflower research. Power Point Presentations of all the reports given at the Forum can now be found on the NSA website under the “research” tab. Visit 2022 (sunflowernsa.com) to see this year’s presentations. Researchers from North and South Dakota, Kansas, Colorado, and Florida presented papers and posters on their work. For a historical look, all the presentations dating back to 2008 are available there as well.
Nominations Invited for NSA Gold Award
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2022 NSA Gold Award. Visit www.sunflowernsa.com/all-about/goldaward/ for the eligibility and criteria requirements. Nominations must be received by February 11, 2022. The NSA Board of Directors will review all submitted applications and choose a winner. The Gold Award will be presented during this year’s NSA Summer Seminar, set for June 28-30, 2022 in Grand Forks, ND. Each year, the National Sunflower Association presents its Gold Award to an individual who has contributed extraordinarily to the overall sunflower industry, either through his or her occupation or through the National Sunflower Association. This award is considered to be the highest award that the NSA presents to individuals. The award has been given since 1989.

The NSA Research Committee met recently to review the proposals and make recommendations for the NSA Board of Directors. The NSA Board will make final decisions on funding during their annual spring meeting in late February. Proposed projects include studies of insects, disease, weeds, and production.
Markets
Last week ADM added a 2022 new crop cash bid for $25.05 in Hebron. ND. The other 2022 new crop prices for NuSun and high oleic sunflower were unchanged to up 25 cents. Nearby NuSun and high oleic prices were unchanged. On February 1, the USDA Risk Management Agency (RMA) will begin the discovery process in determining 2022 crop insurance price elections for sunflower. Producers have the option of choosing Yield Protection, Revenue Protection, and Revenue Protection with the Harvest Price Exclusion. All three policies have the same price election. To follow the direction for sunflower price elections, watch the 2022 CBoT December soyoil contract during the month of February. Last year the projected price for oil sunflower was $22.00 with confections at $27.30. Using the same oil versus confection price differential and based on the current CBoT December contract price the projected price for oil sunflower would be about $32.00 with confections at $37.30. Final price elections will be announced in early March. Harvest is underway in South America. This will have the trade keeping close tabs on weather conditions, yield, and production forecasts. 2021/22 soybean production in Argentina has been trimmed from earlier estimates due to hot, dry weather experienced earlier in the season. In Brazil, most analysts are still expecting a bin-busting soybean crop of around 4.990 billion bushels. The market is also keeping a close eye on Russia-Ukraine tensions as each country is a major grain exporter.
