High Plains Sunflower School
Colorado State University along with Kansas State University will host a Sunflower School on Monday January 30, 2023.  The program will be via Zoom and begin at 9 am and will conclude by 11:30 am Mountain Time.  Topics will include Sunflower Water Use Needs, Marketing Opportunities, and Weed Control Strategies.  No pre-registration is necessary. Corteva eliminates jobs at Woodland facility
Corteva Agriscience is eliminating 51 jobs at its Woodland, California facility run by its Pioneer Hi-Bred International subsidiary. The company shut down production and business activities in Russia which reduced demand for its hybrid sunflower seeds.  The company has enough sunflower production capacity in Europe for the EU market. Corteva will continue to produce parent seeds and partner with a third party to produce hybrid sunflower seed for the U.S. market.
Nuseed to host Sunflower University
Mark your calendars!  Bringing together the latest innovations and research to the sunflower community, Nuseed will be hosting Sunflower University Planting Academy, in-person and virtually, February 8th in at the Ramkota Hotel in Pierre, SD.  This workshop will focus primarily on global sunflower markets and expert planting tips and best practices. Speakers will present from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm CST, with lunch and planter demonstration breakout sessions to follow in the afternoon for in-person attendees. USDA released its latest estimate of the 2022 US sunflower crop with production rebounding significantly from last year’s drought. According to USDA, 2022 sunflower production totaled 2.81 billion pounds, up 48 percent from 2021. The United States average yield per acre of 1,750 pounds increased 221 pounds from 2021. Planted area, at 1.69 million acres, was 31 percent above the previous year. Area harvested increased 29 percent from 2021 to 1.61 million acres. USDA estimated United States production of oil-type sunflower varieties, at 2.57 billion pounds, representing an increase of 48 percent from 2021. Compared with last year, harvested acres were up 30 percent and the average yield increased by 216 pounds to 1,739 pounds per acre and represents the second highest yield on record for the U.S.  The average yield for oil-type sunflower varieties in Minnesota and North Dakota were both record highs. Production of confection sunflower varieties was estimated at 241 million pounds, an increase of 44 percent from 2021. Area harvested, at 128,000 acres, was up 23 percent from 2021. The average yield increased by 278 pounds from 2021 to a record high 1,880 pounds per acre. The 2022 average yield for confection sunflower varieties in North Dakota and Texas were record highs.  In its grain stocks report, USDA lowered old crop oil-type sunflower stocks in all positions by 232,000 pounds from its September grain stocks report. Old crop non-oil sunflower stocks were left unchanged.
Nominations invited for NSA Gold Award
Every year, the National Sunflower Association presents its Gold Award to an individual who has contributed extraordinarily to the overall sunflower industry, either through his or her occupation or through the National Sunflower Association. This award is considered to be the highest award that the NSA presents to individuals. The award has been given since 1989. Some past Gold Award winners include John McLean, Larry Kleingartner, Duane Berglund, Sen. Mark Andrews, Chuck Moses, Jim Krogh, Gary Fick and Robert Majkrzak. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2023 NSA Gold Award. Visit www.sunflowernsa.com/all-about/goldaward/ for the eligibility and criteria requirements. Nominations must be received by February 10, 2023. The NSA Board of Directors will review all submitted applications and choose a recipient. The Gold Award will be presented during this year’s NSA Summer Seminar, set for June 27-29 in Spearfish, SD.
NSA Research Forum attracts large audience
About 100 growers, industry representatives and researchers participated in the National Sunflower Association’s 45th annual research forum January 11-12. Researchers presented papers and posters on their work. Attendees heard presentations on weeds, insects, disease, and new varieties of sunflower. All presentations will be uploaded to the NSA website in the next few weeks.
