Markets
Old crop NuSun and high oleic prices were unchanged to up 20 cents this week. New crop prices were unchanged to up 15 cents. The crop insurance price discovery process continues for 2022 crop insurance price elections. Oil type sunflowers are at $31.90, and confections are $39.90 per cwt., This represents a decrease of 20 cents per cwt. from last week. Last year at this same time, oil type sunflowers were at $21.40, and confections were $26.50 per cwt. To follow sunflower price election trends, watch the 2022 CBoT December soyoil contract through February 28. Final price elections will be announced in early March. The U.S. corn and soybean ending stocks are not tightening as much as expected, according to the latest USDA Supply & Demand and WASDE Reports. USDA reported bigger corn and soybean carryout estimates than trade estimates, disappointing market analysts. USDA pegged the 2021/2022 Brazil soybean output at 134.0 million metric tons (MMT) versus the trade's expectation of 133.0 MMT and the USDA's January estimate of 139 MMT. For Argentina soybean output was estimated at 45.0 MMT versus the trade's expectation of 44.0 MMT and the USDA's January estimate of 46.5 MMT. With the release of the latest USDA production forecasts, traders will focus on the U.S. export sales pace, South American weather, yield reports, and harvest progress. Ongoing tension with the Russia and Ukraine situation will also remain top of mind as well.
SDSP Announces New Processing Facility
The South Dakota Soybean Processors, LLC (SDSP) announced plans to construct a multi-seed processing plant near Mitchell, South Dakota last week. The plant will have the capacity to process soybean and sunflower. According to SDSP Chief Executive Officer Tom Kersting, “The increasing demand for vegetable oil is driving the expansion of soybean processing in the United States. A plant with the ability to also process hi-oilseed crops such as sunflowers (which can produce twice as much oil per acre than soybeans) significantly reduces the risk of the project and puts the plant in a much better position for long-term success.” Operation is expected to begin in 2025, and SDSP management noted engineering, permitting, and negotiations with state and local officials are still needed to finalize the project.
