Oil Premium Paid at Crush Plants
Something else to consider when making final planting decisions is the oil premiums that crush plants pay on sunflower. Sunflower is the only oilseed that pays premiums for oil content above 40%. Considering oil premiums that are offered at the crush plants on oil content above 40% at a rate of 2% price premium for each 1% of oil above 40%; this pushes a contract with 45% oil content gross return 10% higher per cwt. The AOG $32.15 contract increases to $35.35, and the cash $34.10 contract moves up to $37.50. Markets
A significant winter storm dumped heavy snow in and around the Northern Plains with North Dakota being hit the hardest last week. The heavy snow that occurred across the north produced 1 to 2.5 feet of snow in many locations. On the upside, one to over two inches of liquid equivalent moisture was received for drought areas in western North Dakota and Montana. Cold temperatures are expected through this week and will be unfavorable for any fieldwork or planting for at least two weeks as snowmelt will be a very slow process. New crop sunflower prices extended gains last week at the ND crush plants, adding 40 cents. Old crop was unchanged. As the war in Ukraine approaches two months, worries over tight global supply and production prospects continue to lift sunflower prices. Ukraine is the world’s No. 1 sunflower oil exporter. But with the Russian invasion severely curbing sunflower oil export capabilities, that volume could fall nearly 36% this year giving others the opportunity to fulfill market demand. Since the war began, old crop prices have added $5.50-$6.50 with new crop adding $5.50-$5.75. New crop prices are at record highs and there is still time to adjust your plans to take advantage of the market opportunities that sunflowers can offer. Late season planted crops like sunflower can perform well and markets will reward that production. With lower than anticipated acres, diversifying market risk with some sunflower acres would be a good option in 2022.
