Markets
The current price surge across commodities and strong product demand have led to nearby NuSun and high oleic sunflower prices sustaining market highs at the North Dakota crush plants. Last week nearby prices were unchanged to up 10 cents. New crop oil sunflower prices are higher than a year ago at this same time with oil crushers still offering Act of God and cash contracts. Last year new crop prices were $17.85-$17.95 for NuSun with high oleic at $18.05-$18.25. This week new crop NuSun cash prices are in a range of $21.15-$21.25 up $3.30-$3.40 per cwt. with high oleic at $22.55-$22.70 which is $4.45-$4.50 per cwt higher versus last year. On March 31, the USDA will release important reports that will have an impact on the markets. These include the planting intentions, and the quarterly stocks estimates. The planting intentions report will be very important. Most market analysts are forecasting as much as a two million acre increase in corn plantings and a seven million acre increase in soybean plantings. Traders will use the USDA acreage estimates as the starting point for supply and demand estimates for the 2021/22 marketing year. Traders are also monitoring a report that China may be reducing corn and soymeal volumes in feed rations in favor of cheaper alternative grains. If realized, this of course, would have huge implications for the global grain trade as China is the world’s largest buyer of soybeans and soy products.
