Are your bins ready?
As harvest approaches, take time to make sure your bins are ready. Bins with perforated floors work better for drying sunflower than those with ducts. Aeration is essential, especially in larger bins. Aeration may be accomplished with floor mounted ducts or portable aerators. Aeration fans should deliver 1/10 to 1 cfm per cwt of sunflower. If aeration is not available, sunflower should be rotated between bins to avoid hot spots developing in the stored grain. For more on harvest and storage, click here

Deadline approaching for Research Grant Applications
Research is an important part of the NSA’s mission. Each year, the NSA provides grants to public researchers to stimulate new or additional work that may result in lower production costs, increased quality, and higher yields. Pre-proposals for projects to be considered for funding in 2021 are now being accepted. To read more and to submit pre-proposals, click here. Grant applications are due by October 6, 2020.
Canadian Sunflower Production Projected Higher
Canadian farmers planted around 100,000 acres of sunflower in 2020, according to industry estimates. Historically, Manitoba accounts for about 85-90 percent of the total each year. 2020 sunflower acreage is up significantly from the 55,900 acres planted the previous year and is the highest since 2015. Statistics Canada estimates 2020 production at 95,100 metric tons (MT), which compares with the 62,900 MT produced in 2019 and the five-year average of 60,200 MT. Canadian growers’ plant both oil-type and confection sunflower. Recently, more acreage expansion has been seen in oil-types. This represents a shift from previous history as confections had accounted for most Canadian sunflower acres.

Markets
2021 new crop sunflower prices are out at the ADM Enderlin crush plant with cash contracts available. NuSun is at $17.75 with high oleic at $18.00. Something else to consider is the oil premiums that crush plants pay on sunflower. Sunflower is the only oilseed that pays premiums for oil content above 40%. Considering oil premiums that are offered at the crush plants on oil content above 40% at a rate of 2% price premium for each 1% of oil above 40%; this pushes a contract with 45% oil content gross return 10% higher per cwt. The $17.75 contract increases to $19.50 and the cash $18.00 contract moves up to $19.80. Nearby prices at the crush plants are unchanged. The sunflower crop continues to mature at a rapid rate. The weather forecast for the next two weeks is predicting drier than normal moisture conditions in the sunflower growing region. This bodes well for crop dry down and an earlier than normal start to harvest. Harvest has started in North Dakota and could be just days away in some South Dakota locations. Harvest continues to move along in Texas and is ahead of the five-year average. Trading in the week ahead will focus on the USDA Grain Stocks report that will be released this week. Traders are expecting sunflower stocks to be down significantly from a year ago. USDA will give its first estimate of 2020 sunflower production in October.
