Minnesota's sunflower harvest is 63 percent complete, behind the average of 90 percent. In Colorado, 56 percent of the crop is harvested, and 58 percent of the crop is reported in good to excellent condition.

Sunflower Production Meeting Scheduled

Colorado State University Extension will host a sunflower production meeting on Monday, November 26. The meeting will be held at the Prowers County Fairgrounds Home Ec Building and will be held from 12- 2:30 p.m. The program will begin with a noon lunch complements of the Colorado Sunflower Administrative Committee (CSAC). Topics addressed will include advanced production strategies, controlling broadleaf and grassy weeds in sunflower, and marketing sunflower. Call CSU Extension Agent Kelly Roesch at 719-336-7734 to be counted for lunch.

ADM and Cargill Form Technology Joint Venture

ADM and Cargill have agreed to form a technology joint venture, Grainbridge LLC. The joint venture intends to provide grain marketing decision support, e-commerce and account management software for North American farmers. This includes the development of digital tools designed to help farmers across the U.S. and Canada consolidate information on production economics and grain marketing activities into a single digital platform, at no cost to them. One of the first tools being developed by Grainbridge will give farmers secure access to their combined ADM and Cargill transactions, including contracts, scale tickets and payment information. This dashboard is being designed to provide farmers with insights into their current grain position and real-time opportunities. The transaction is subject to regulatory approval and is expected to close in the next few months. Terms of the joint venture are not being disclosed. USDA delivered bearish news to traders in their November report last week.  USDA pegged soybean production at a record 4.6 billion bushels, down 90 million bushels, or about 2%, from the October forecast. However, domestic soybean ending stocks came in at 955 million bushels, up 70 million bushels from last month as USDA reduced soybean exports by 160 million bushels on lower sales forecasts to China.Sunflower harvest continues to slowly move along in the US. Most states are equal to or trailing the five-year average harvest pace per USDA. Wet and below normal cold weather has hampered harvest progress in the largest production area of the Dakotas and Minnesota. In the past week, producers harvested an additional 102,900 acres pushing 2018 harvested acres to more than 710,000 acres. This represents 62% of this year’s projected harvested acres and is behind the five-year average. Last year at this time 81% of the crop was harvested. Seed quality remains generally very good. Sunflower prices at the crush plants ended the week mixed at unchanged to up 5 cents. New crop sunflower prices are out at the crush plants with cash and Act of God (AOG) contracts available. Something else to consider is the oil premiums that crush plants pay on sunflower.With the USDA production estimate in the market and harvest wrapping up in the Northern Hemisphere attention now shifts to demand and to South America's crops.
