North Dakota County Sunflower Election Results
North Dakota county sunflower representatives were elected in three of the state’s seven sunflower districts last month. All county reps are now eligible for the district election and to serve on the NSA’s Board of Directors for a three-year term. District sunflower elections will be held in Districts 1, 6 and 7 this month. Here is the information for the upcoming elections:

District 1 election will be March 21 at 11 a.m. at the Walsh County Extension Building in Park River, ND.
  • Cavalier County – Paul Boesl, Langdon
  • Nelson County – Scott Nelson, Lakota (current district representative)
  • Pembina County – Craig Sharp, Hamilton
District 6 election will be March 19 at 11 a.m.
  • McLean County – Eugene Wirtz, Underwood
  • Mountrail County – Keith Meiers, Ross
  • Ward County – Cale Neshem, Berthold
  • Williams County – T.J. Halverson, Tioga
District 7 election will be held March 26 at 1 p.m. at the Ramada Grand Dakota in Dickinson, ND.
  • Adams County – Steve Wegner, Reeder
  • Grant County – Terry Nagel, Carson
  • Billings County – Bill Kessel, Belfield
  • Bowman County – Jeff Brown, Scranton
  • Mercer County – Dean Knell, Hazen
  • Oliver County – Lonnie Henke, Hannover
  • Slope County – Mike Hansen, Bowman
  • Stark County – Art Ridl, Dickinson (current district representative)
iPad Winners

NSA Scholarship Available
The National Sunflower Association is seeking applicants for the Curtis Stern Memorial Scholarship. In tribute to the dedicated work of Curtis Stern, an industry advocate and former NSA board member, the NSA Board of Directors established a memorial scholarship in his name. Funds assist students who study in the field of agriculture with a special emphasis on sunflower production, promotion, or research. Preference will be given to students who are in their last two years of undergraduate studies or in graduate level studies and have maintained at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA on a 4.0=A scale. Application deadline is April 1, 2019. A total of $5,000 is available for the scholarship this year. Applications can be submitted online. Click here to learn more. Markets
The price discovery period for crop insurance for sunflower ended on February 28. The 2019 price elections for sunflower will be announced this week. The price election for oil type sunflowers is expected to be $16.70 with confections at $22.50 per cwt. A smaller 2018 US sunflower crop and good demand are supporting old crop NuSun and High Oleic prices which ended the week down 5 cents to up 15 cents at the crush plants. New crop prices are in range of $16.45-$17.25 for NuSun with High Oleics at $16.75-$18.00 at the crush plants. Crush plants are offering cash and Act of God (AOG) contracts for fall delivery. USDA recently updated its statistical guesses at itsannual Agricultural Outlook Forum. USDA chief economist Robert Johansson reported that US corn acres could top 92 million acres this year. The average guess from the trade was 91.7 million. USDA anticipates 2019 US soybean acres will trend lower this year, reaching around 85 million acres. This is below the average guess from the trade of 86.1 million acres. According to Johansson 2019 average soybean prices will be near a five-year low and will likely need at least through 2020 to recover further due to current large ending stocks. Traders will work off USDA’s expectations for 2019 planted acres, supply & demand outlooks along with ending stocks figures until more reports are released at the end of March.
