Markets
Nearby NuSun and high oleic prices were up 10 to 15 cents this week at the crush plants. 2019 new crop NuSun and high oleic prices moved another 10 cents higher this week as well. USDA announced on its website last Friday that due to the lapse in federal funding, work on various USDA reports will remain suspended and report releases will be determined and made public once funding has been restored. This means that the annual crop production report for sunflower will not be available as planned on January 11. This report would have given producers and the trade their most current look at 2018 harvested acres and production figures for oil and non-oil sunflower. The lack of USDA reports has not affected trade in the near term but will become more relevant if the shutdown drags on for a longer time period. The birdfood market has been somewhat quiet. Warmer than normal temperatures with little snow on the US East Coast, the primary market for birdfood, continues to be a drag on demand. On the CBoT, thesoy complex continues to push higher on weather concerns in South America and continued optimism that the upcoming trade talks in Beijing thisweek will go well.Overall price direction will continue to be determined by export demand news and South American oilseed production prospects in the near term.
