USDA to collect 2020 crop production and stocks data
As the 2020 growing season comes to an end, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will contact producers nationwide to gather final year-end crop production numbers and the amount of grain and oilseeds stored on their farms. At the same time, NASS will survey grain facility operators to determine year-end off-farm grain and oilseed stocks. Responses to the survey will be used in calculating county-level yields, which have a direct impact on farmers. USDA’s Farm Service Agency may use the data in administering producer programs and in determining disaster assistance program calculations. All responses are completely confidential. Survey results will be published in several reports, including the Crop Production Annual Summary  and the quarterly Grain Stocks report, both to be released on January 12. These and all NASS reports are available online by clicking here.

Markets
Nearby sunflower prices continue to follow the rally in the Chicago Board of Trade oilseed complex. NuSun and high oleic prices at the crush plants were up 10 to 20 cents. In the past two weeks, nearby prices have added 40 to 55 cents. Overall, NuSun and high oleic prices continue to trade 60 cents to $1.00 per cwt. higher than the 60 day moving average at the crush plants. 2021 new crop also continued to move higher adding an additional 10 to 30 cents last week. Sunflower harvest is getting closer to the finish line for this season. Very favorable weather conditions in the past week allowed sunflower producers to make good harvest progress. Harvest progress advanced 4% to 93% complete for the week ending November 22. Harvest progress remains 12% ahead of the five-year average. In the past week, producers harvested an additional 66,000 acres pushing 2020 harvested acres to about 1,427,000 acres. Crop quality remains very good and yields have been above average in most cases. Harvest progress remains about one week to ten days ahead of the five year average. Last year at this same time only 53% was in the bin. There continue to be reports of drought-related yield reductions in sunflower in the Black Sea region and a planted area reduction for Argentina. Given the location of the crop losses, this bears watching as international trade would assume much of the impact and could open some market opportunities.
