USDA’s first sunflower production forecast for 2016 came in at 2.46 billion pounds, down 16 percent from 2015. Area planted, at 1.6 million acres, is down 3 percent from the June estimate and down 14 percent from last year. US sunflower growers are expected to harvest 1.54 million acres, down 3 percent from June and down 14 percent from last year. The overall average yield for all sunflower types is forecast, at 1,596 pounds per acre. This is only 29 pounds lower than last year’s record high overall average yield. The yield will be the second highest yield on record, if realized. USDA expects higher yields in Colorado, North Dakota and Texas compared with last year. The yield in North Dakota, at 1,614 pounds per acre, will be the second highest yield on record. The forecasted production in North Dakota will make it the leading sunflower producing state at 1.08 billion pounds, up 1 percent from 2015 due to improved yields this year compared with last year. South Dakota had led the nation in sunflower production for the past three years and will not be far behind at 906 million pounds. There were few surprises in the corn and soybean yield and projections from the USDA report.  With the release the USDA report, CBoT traders will now focus on South American planting progress and demand news.
