Crop Progress

Harvest is underway in the Dakotas. North Dakota producers report 6 percent of the sunflower crop harvested; South Dakota reports 2 percent complete. In Texas, 58 percent of the sunflower crop has been harvested. Sunflower conditions are good across the reporting states, with North Dakota and Colorado both reporting 71 percent of their sunflower crop in good to excellent condition.

Are Your Bins Ready?

As harvest approaches, take time to make sure your bins are ready. Bins with perforated floors work better for drying sunflower than those with ducts. Aeration is essential, especially in larger bins. Aeration may be accomplished with floor mounted ducts or portable aerators. Aeration fans should deliver 1/10 to 1 cfm per cwt of sunflower. If aeration is not available, sunflower should be rotated between bins to avoid hot spots developing in the stored grain. For more on harvest and storage, click here.

Call for Papers

Here’s your chance to be a part of the National Sunflower Association’s Research Forum. We’re looking for research papers to be presented at the Forum, set for January 11-12, 2017 in Fargo, ND. Presentations may be either oral or in the form of a poster. A time will be designated for authors to be with their posters and answer questions. Each oral presentation will be limited to 10-12 minutes with 2-3 minutes allowed for questions. If you are interested in presenting a paper at the Forum, submit your application online here. You do not have to submit the actual paper or poster at this time, just the information indicated online and the author information. Submissions must be completed by November 14, 2016. If you plan to attend, registration will be open on our website soon.

Grower Report

An early planting date led to an early harvest date for Crookston, Minnesota producer Kevin Capistran. Capistran was done planting his sunflower on May 5, and by the end of August desiccated those fields. He finished harvesting sunflower in mid-September. Capistran says yields were 2,300-2,400 pounds per acre, despite some disease issues.

Markets

According to USDA, old crop sunflower stocks in all positions on September 1, 2016 totaled 414 million pounds, up 74 percent from a year ago. All stocks stored on farms totaled 62.4 million pounds and off-farm stocks totaled 351 million pounds. Stocks of oil type sunflower seed are 235 million pounds; of this total, 37.8 million pounds are on-farm stocks and 197 million pounds are off-farm stocks. Non-oil sunflower stocks totaled 179 million pounds, with 24.6 million pounds stored on the farm and 154 million pounds stored off the farm. Stocks of oil type sunflower seed were lower than expected. Non-oil stocks were in line with expectations. Soybean stocks were near trade guesses and at a 5-year high. Corn stocks were lower than expected but the highest since 2006. Wheat stocks were well above trade estimates and the largest since 1987.  USDA’s next production estimates and supply and demand report will be out on October 12. This will give traders the first official estimate of the 2016 US sunflower crop. Most of the US crop is rated in the good to excellent categories so yields and quality are expected to be above average. Initial yield reports have been positive and quality is generally very good.  Traders attention will focus on yield reports, harvest progress, the pace of farmer selling and demand news.
