Sunflower Highlights

The 2016 sunflower harvest is almost done, with all reporting states checking in with the majority of the crop harvested. Minnesota producers are 91% finished, Kansas producers report 79% of the sunflower crop has been harvested.

Mark Torno Joins NSA Board of Directors

Mark Torno, CROPLAN Seed, has joined the NSA Board of Directors as a representative of the hybrid seed industry. Torno is the Diverse Field Crops Marketing Manager for CROPLAN Seed. He has worked for WinField since 1997 in different roles from sales agronomist to his role now as marketing manager for wheat, sunflower, and canola. Torno grew up on his family’s farm near Bottineau, ND and is a graduate of North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND. Torno replaces Bill Gilbert on the NSA Board of Directors.

Grower Report

Sharon, ND grower Ben Vig wrapped up the sunflower harvest about three weeks ago, and is now hauling this year’s high oleic crop to market. Vig says the wet weather this summer did some damage, but it was still a decent crop.

Advent Seeds and Texas A&M AgriLife Research Form Partnership

Advanta Seeds, a UPL Group Company, has partnered with Texas A&M AgriLife Research for seed technology research and development. The establishment of a new Advanta Seeds biotech research station will enhance the areas of mutual benefit between these two organizations. These include the breeding of sorghum, tropical and subtropical corn, tomatoes and hot peppers, as well as applying molecular markers to plant breeding in sunflower, canola, wheat and rice, among other crops. The research station aims to support all global research programs of Advanta Seeds. Advanta Seeds is an international leader in the research, development, production, and the sale of high-performance seeds and agricultural solutions.

USDA’s November Crop Production report for soybeans topped private industry estimates and caught the market by surprise. The U.S. soybean crop is now forecast 92 million bushels larger than the October forecast. USDA raised soybean ending stocks 85 million bushels. With the USDA production estimate in the market and harvest wrapping up in the Northern Hemisphere attention now shifts to demand and to South America's crops. Sunflower harvest is getting close to wrapping up in the US. Most states are equal to or slightly ahead of the five-year average harvest pace per USDA. Yield reports continue to be very positive and quality is generally very good. Yields are being reported in the 1,500-2,800-pound range with some reports over 3,000 pounds. Reports are still coming out indicating that oil supplies are expected to tighten significantly in the 2016/17 marketing year as world consumption outstrips production.   Despite record vegetable oil production this year, and essentially over the past three years, world vegetable oil stocks have been drawn down for four consecutive years. Some are suggesting that world vegetable oil stocks will end up at the lowest levels since the 2011-2012 season. This would allow world vegetable oil markets to firm up with the market becoming more oil driven rather than meal. This is positive news for sunflower as seed prices are primarily based on oil values.
