USDA Allocates MAP and FMD Funds

The National Sunflower Association has been awarded more than $1.3 million from USDA for Fiscal Year 2017. NSA will receive $1,133,121 for Market Access Program (MAP) and $223,041 for Foreign Market Development (FMD) program. Under MAP, the Foreign Ag Service will provide $173.5 million to 70 nonprofit organizations and cooperatives. FMD will provide $26.6 million in fiscal year 2017 funds to 26 trade organizations that represent U.S. agricultural producers. A recent study conducted by noted land grant university economists found that MAP and FMD contributed $309 billion to farm export revenue between 1977 and 2014, an average of $8.2 billion per year.

Late Season County Agricultural Production Survey

Many producers have received a survey to collect data that will be used to determine row crop and hay county level acreage, yield, and production estimates for 2016. The surveys were mailed to producers from the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). The data collected is used in administering producer programs such as the Agricultural Risk Coverage (ARC) included in the 2014 Farm Bill and in determining disaster assistance program allocations. County-level data for corn, soybeans, sunflowers, canola, and flaxseed will be published in February 2017 and dry edible peas, lentils, chickpeas, other dry edible beans, sugar beets, and hay in April 2017. N Calculator App Available for Android Phones

The N calculator—included in a single app including corn, spring wheat/durum, and sunflower—is now available for download onto Android phones. Search the “Google Play Store” for “ND Crop Nitrogen Calculators” and install. Once installed, select the crop and follow instructions. The original NDSU circular document for each crop is also available on the app. Programmers are hoping to release the same app for iPhones soon.

CBoT soyoil rallied last week after the EPA Announced a 2017 biofuel mandate higher than expected. The mandate was 280 million gallons above estimates. This could lead to significantly higher usage of soyoil in biodiesel. This sent soybean oil futures to their highest level in more than two years. Some traders are thinking that soyoil values could move even higher if projected stocks drop to lower than expected levels. Sunflower prices did pick up some momentum from this news but ample seed supplies at the crush plants kept a lid on gains. Large harvest deliveries to crush plants from active producer selling in the late summer months plus deliveries of previous contracted seed have led to a soft nearby seed market. Producer selling will likely slow down given current pricing unless storage is an issue with the hope of a rally occurring later this year or early 2017. Reports are still coming out indicating that oil supplies are expected to tighten significantly in the 2016/17 marketing year as world consumption outstrips production. Even though sunflower prices did not fully participate in the oil rally, the EPA announcement and world oil supply situation are positive news for seed prices going forward. Seed prices should begin to follow CBoT soyoil futures more closely after the crush plants work through currently held stocks.
