Crop Progress

Sunflower planting is finished in Minnesota, and producers in other reporting states made good progress this week as well. North Dakota producers are 93% finished planting, and 77% of that state's crop is reported emerged.

CHS Announces Northwest Minnesota Sunflower Processing Plant Closure

Thirteen workers at a CHS facility near Thief River Falls, Mn will be laid off as the company works to move all of its sunflower processing operations to one location in North Dakota. Warehouse and storage facilities will remain at the site in Hazel, MN, CHS plans to move all processing to Grandin, ND. In a statement, CHS says effective July 12, the facility at Hazel will cease processing operations. Eligible employees at the Hazel facility are being offered separation benefits.

NSA Summer Seminar Starts Tomorrow

Our biggest event of the year gets underway tomorrow! The 37thannual NSA Summer Seminar is being held in Medora, ND June 25-27. The event begins on Tuesday evening with the annual Curtis Stern Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser. Wednesday is filled with presentations covering valuable and timely information. On Thursday, we will wrap things up with the annual golf tournament. Registration at the door will be $425 and golf will be $195. Click here for the complete schedule.

SDSU Extension Seeks Grower Input for Survey

SDSU, the South Dakota Nutrient Research and Education Council and the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station at SDSU are interested in learning more about the nutrient management practices farmers use. They’re conducting a 20-minute voluntary and confidential survey. The results will be used to provide unbiased recommendations and help increase economic and environmental sustainability. Red River Commodities Announces Retirement of Longtime CEO Bob Majkrzak

Red River Commodities announced that longtime leader Robert (Bob) Majkrzak will retire later this year after 30 years as President and CEO. Under Majkrzak’s leadership, Red River Commodities has grown from one operating unit to seven major operating units in three states and Canada, earning a solid reputation as a worldwide leader in the sunflower industry. Majkrzak began working for Red River Commodities in 1985 as Manager of Production and Engineering. He was named President and CEO in 1989. Majkrzak has held several industry, public and private Board of Director and Chairman positions, including on the NSA Board of Directors.  Eric Christianson will succeed Bob Majkrzak as CEO effective August 1, 2019. To ensure a seamless transition, Majkrzak, will continue to assist the RRC management team until his retirement on December 31, 2019.

At the North Dakota crush plants old crop NuSun prices were unchanged with High Oleic prices down 5 cents to unchanged. New crop sunflower prices continued their upward movement last week as NuSun prices ended the week up 10 to 15 cents with High Oleic up 15 to 20 cents. In the High Plains, old and new crop NuSun and High Oleic sunflower prices were unchanged. In the past two weeks old crop has gained in range of 10 to 35 cents with High Oleic adding 10 to 30 cents as well. New crop NuSun and High Oleic contracts have added 10 to 30 cents during the same period. On Friday, USDA will release its 2019 planted acres report. The acreage figures will necessitate careful consideration on the part of the trade because they will be based on surveys from the first two weeks of June. With this season’s difficult planting conditions, uncertainty remains about how many acres farmers will plant this year, with some fields switched from corn and others too wet to plant. Yield drag could also be an issue that’s even harder for traders to assess. Traders will also be waiting for news about U.S.-China trade talks as the U.S. and China presidents will meet in Japan this week to relaunch trade talks after a month-long stalemate. Speculation on the outcome of this meeting and position squaring ahead of USDA’s acreage report will guide the market this week.
