Crop Progress

Planting is complete in Minnesota, and North Dakota producers are nearly finished. 93% of North Dakota's sunflower crop is reported planted, and 63% is emerged. In Kansas, 14% of the crop is reported emerged as well, with 51% of the crop planted.

Grower Report

Dickinson, ND area producer Art Ridl finished planting 1,900 acres of sunflower about a week ago. All but about 150 acres of that 1,900 acres planted is high oleic sunflower – the rest are dehulls. Ridl says planting weather was perfect, but things are really dry now.

NSA Summer Seminar Features Panel Discussion About Sustainability

With the world’s population at seven billion people and growing, feeding the world has become even more challenging. Sustainability is the latest buzz word in agriculture, but what does it really mean, and what’s being done to make agriculture more sustainable? That will be the topic of a panel discussion at this year’s NSA Summer Seminar. The panel includes North Dakota producer Jeff Oberholtzer, Dr. Elisabeth Fischer of Syngenta, Kate Kollman with General Mills and Chris Habourt, CEO of Agrible. Last Friday the USDA released its latest supply and demand report which was in line with industry estimates with US soybean carryout lowered, corn lower but still adequate and wheat raised. On June 30, USDA will revise US 2016 planted acreage by crop. Industry estimates for US corn acres is from 92.5 to 93.4 versus USDA March estimate of 93.6. Wet spring in the south and increase in soybean prices have the trade expecting to see some corn acres changing to soybeans. US soybean acres are expected to be in a range of 83.0 to 85.0 million versus USDA March estimate of 82.2 million. If soybean acres increase sharply after USDA’s June 30 Acreage report, soybean prices could fall sharply. The recent hot weather forecasts have intensified awareness of CBoT traders to the expected La Nina event this summer. Previous La Nina events, the latest being in 2012, have been linked to droughts. The latest 90-day forecast favors hot weather for the Midwest, with normal precipitation. These thoughts continue to fuel the rally in oilseeds and products. Old and new crop sunflower prices have followed the upward trend as well. It seems early for a weather rally as temperatures have been hot but this should not hurt crops yet. Weather is key, and there is still a long summer ahead of us, so it will continue to dictate the markets.
