Crop Progress

Nearly all of North Dakota's sunflower crop is emerged and three percent of the crop is already reported blooming. That's ahead of the five year average. Meanwhile, in Colorado 90 percent of that state's crop is planted, which is right on track with the five year average. Crop conditions in Minnesota are 89 percent good to excellent.

Grower Report

Despite extremely dry conditions, Onida, SD producer Chuck Todd says his sunflower crop looks pretty good. Todd planted just over 350 acres of con-oils and says while the stands are a little thin, the plants look good.

Friends and Neighbors Day at USDA-ARS Mandan Site

The public is invited to celebrate Friends and Neighbors Day at the USDA-ARS Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory from 2 to 5:30 p.m. on July 27. You can learn about local ag research, take a tour, and check out the exhibits researchers have been working on. Topics to be covered include how ag research is done, water quality, science of the soil, cover crops, honeybees, and more. The laboratory is located south of the Heart River on ND Highway 6 at 1701 10th Ave. SW in Mandan ND.

Markets

USDA released its planted acres report last week. Area planted to sunflower in 2017 totals 1.27 million acres, down 21 percent from 2016. Harvested area is expected to decrease 21 percent from last year to 1.21 million acres. Planted area of oil type varieties, at 1.08 million acres, is down 24 percent from 2016, and harvested area is also expected to decrease 24 percent from last year to 1.04 million acres. Planted acreage of non-oil varieties, estimated at 186,000, is up 4 percent from last year. Harvested area is expected to increase 6 percent from last year to 175,500 acres. Total sunflower acres were below the March report. USDA increased soybean, corn and cotton acres from the March intentions report. Wheat acres were below the March report. USDA pegged corn acres at 90.89 million, up 890,000 acres from the March report. Soybean acres were reported at a record-high 89.51 million acres and 7 percent higher than last year. Analysts were surprised that soybean acres did not top corn this year. Total wheat acres were reported at 45.66 million acres, the lowest all-wheat planted acres since 1919. Soybean stocks came in at 963 million bushels, which was slightly below the average trade guess of 983 million bushels.  With the release of the USDA report, the key to oilseed prices going forward will be US summer weather and demand news.
