Markets
The markets were fairly quiet ahead of Easter weekend. Old and new crop sunflower prices were unchanged this week. At this point traders are not concerned about planning delays in the Midwest. Planting progress is behind the five year average but thoughts are there is still plenty of time to get the crop in the ground. Market concerns are building over slowing Chinese consumption of soybeans due to the devastation to its hog herd caused by African swine flu. CBoT traders fear this could result in China not needing to buy many more soybeans from the US this year even with a successful conclusion to a new trade deal. China already has nearly 300 million bushels of unshipped purchases from the US on the books. If this situation unfolds it would put additional pressure on old and new crop soybean prices in the near term as the market tries to pare back projected 2019 soybean acres. According to Oil Worldvegetable oil prices are expected to be supported by a slowing down in world production growth for soybean, rapeseed and palm oil. Increased oil import demand in China and India coupled with further growth in biodiesel production will also be supportive to oil prices. This is positive news for sunflower as the sunflower market is mainly driven by oil values. Trading for the next few weeks will focus on 2019 acreage, export sales, plus US/China trade talks.
