Sunflower Hybrids: What’s New for Next Year

A1025NSR is a new 102-day rust-resistant NuSun® hybrid equipped with an excellent disease resistant package. A1025NSR is particularly well-adapted to the High Plains, especially where rust has been a problem. It’s also a very good de-huller with very good standability.
A1040NS is a 104-day dual purpose dehuller. It’s a NuSun hybrid with very consistent oleic content (+/- 65%). Yields are very consistent and plants are robust.
A999 is a 99-day traditional oil hybrid with a very good disease resistance package. It’s a consistently high yielder for maturity, with very good standability.
A990NS is a 99-day NuSun hybrid that is an excellent dehuller. A990NS has consistently high oil yields and a very good disease resistance package.
A980NSCL is a 98-day NuSun with consistently good test weights. This very good dehuller also offers the flexibility of the Clearfield system.
A940NS, a 94-day NuSun, is a very good dehuller with very consistent yields. It has very good drydown and excellent double-crop potential.
RH 1121 is a new confection hybrid from CHS that offers excellent yield potential as well as very good seed size. RH 1121 has very good agronomic characteristics, very good standability and consistent performance. RH 1121 has a uniform bloom for good insect control opportunities. It is a full-season hybrid.
RH 1123, a new “Extreme” hybrid, offers improved yield potential for CHS’s exclusive “Extreme” full production contracts. RH 1123 has extremely large seed and very good yield potential. Standability is very good, and the maturity range is medium-late among confection hybrids.
RH 3126 is a new XL hybrid from CHS offering a significant yield improvement. RH 3126 is a three-way hybrid with excellent standability and very good yield potential. RH 3126 will be widely available to be grown under our CHS exclusive XL contract. A proprietary hybrid for our full-production XL contracts.
RH 3126RT is a rust-tolerant version of RH 3126. RH 3126RT will be available on a limited basis for the 2008 growing season. It offers excellent standability and very good yield potential. RH 3126RT will only be available on our exclusive full-production XL contract.
The hybrid portfolio offered by Croplan Genetics brand sunflower for 2008 includes two NuSun hybrids, three IMI NuSun and one confection. We will have ample supply of our NuSun hybrids to help grow the acres in the United States.
325 DMR,NS — This new NuSun hybrid is 92 days in maturity and will move north to the Canadian border or for second cropping in the High Plains. It is resistant to all prevalent U.S. races of downy mildew. The oil percentage is very high with an above-average yield. It is medium-tall in height with very good stalk and root strength. This hybrid has a stay-green characteristic, so will fight off diseases throughout the growing season, giving it great late-season plant health. You may need to consider desiccation in the fall for ease of combining.
528 CL,DMR,NS — This Clearfield hybrid is 92 days in maturity and will move far north as well as for second cropping. It is the earliest-maturing IMI in our portfolio that is resistant to all prevalent U.S. races of downy mildew. This hybrid has high oil percentages. It is a short-stature and very uniform hybrid.
564 CL,NS —This Clearfield/NuSun hybrid is 97 days to maturity. It will move very well from Interstate 94 in North Dakota and going south. Excellent oil content and yield. This is our new and improved replacement to 544 CL,NS. It has one to two percentage points better oil content and is one to two days later.
369 DMR,NS — This is a full-season NuSun hybrid that is 97 days to maturity. It is resistant to all prevalent U.S. races of downy mildew. It is a medium-tall hybrid. Oil content is very high, with an excellent yield potential. It will have the stay-green characteristic, providing very good late-season plant health; and you will want to strongly consider desiccation to kill the plant early. By desiccating the plant you will be able to harvest earlier, which should reduce the damage caused by birds as well as shatter loss.
584 CL,NS — This is a full-season IMI/NuSun hybrid that is 98 days to maturity. It is a Clearfield-tolerant hybrid designed for the High Plains geography. This is a uniform and attractive hybrid with an excellent yield potential. With great root strength, it will stand very well.
139 —This confection hybrid is an excellent choice for the in-shell market. It has very large seed size with excellent color, black with white edges. It is one of the best hybrids for early emergence and earlier than most confections.
Dahlgren & Company
New D-9519 — A full-season, excellent-yielding confection variety, 9519 has excellent seed size capability, good stalk and root strength, with very good uniformity. 9519 offers the opportunity to participate in a wide range of marketing areas.
D-9532DM — A single-cross early maturing variety bred for the Northern regions, it has excellent yield potential. 9532DM has impressive disease package — rust tolerant with added downy mildew resistance. This variety will also give you uniform bloom for improved insect control.
D-8048 has proven itself in the sunflower industry. This mid-season confection variety is adaptable over a wide range of environments. The long-seed hybrid has demonstrated excellent standability and good drydown.
New DO-4455NS — A full-season NuSun con-oil hybrid, 4455 has good drought tolerance with improved yield, making it a strong complement to 4421.
New DO-4370 — This early to mid- maturing oil hulling hybrid has proven to be the premier oil hulling variety. 4370 features short stature, very good standability and consistent yields with multiple marketing opportunities.
DO-4488NSCL — A new addition, 4488 is a mid- to late- maturing Clearfield/NuSun oil hulling variety with excellent yield potential and very good Clearfield herbicide tolerance, along with strong root and stalk for excellent standability. Limited supply.
D-95EXP-CL is a single-cross, high- yielding, long-type Clearfield confection sunflower hybrid. It has mid-season maturity, offering uniform plant height and flowering to aid in timelier drydown. Limited-supply experimental for 2008.
DEKALB & Interstate
Two top names in the sunflower industry, Interstate® and DEKALB® — “Oil Seed Experts” — are working together to better serve their farmer customers in 2008 with a wide range of products offering exceptional germplasm, enhanced traits (including Clearfield®/Beyond® herbicide tolerance) and modified oil enhancements (including traditional, Nusun® and high-oleic products. Excellent tolerance to diseases such as downy mildew, rust and Sclerotinia is also a trademark of many of these products.
DKF29-30 NS/DM is a NuSun® hybrid with early season maturity similar to DKF29-90. This product features an excellent disease package, including resistance to all known races of downy mildew. Outstanding yield potential, excellent oil content and stable oleic levels make this NuSun hybrid an excellent choice for the northern half of North Dakota and Minnesota.
DKF34-33 NS/DM — High yield potential and excellent yield stability have been a trademark of this early season NuSun hybrid. Excellent oil content and resistance to all known races of downy mildew are added features of this product.
IS6131 NS – This Interstate early season 93-day relative maturity NuSun hybrid is an ideal candidate for the northern parts of North Dakota and Minnesota. Stable oleic levels, excellent oil content, fast drydown and resistance to all known races of downy mildew are features of this product. Medium plant height and excellent standability make this early maturity hybrid an excellent choice for either traditional or late planting.
IS7120 HO/DM – This newly released high-oleic hybrid features stable oleic levels above 85%. This product is included on the approved list for processor-contracted high-oleic sunflower. Excellent, stable yield potential along with strong oil content make this hybrid one of the top early/mid- season high-oleic products (95-day relative maturity). A strong disease package, including resistance to all known races of downy mildew, rounds out the features of this exciting new product.
92N53 is an early NuSun variety with downy mildew resistance and very high oil. It is medium height with excellent stalks.
94N82 is a medium/full-season NuSun hybrid. Medium/tall with very good stalks, it offers consistently top oil and yields.
94C38 is a medium-late NuSun/ Clearfield hybrid. It is a tall hybrid with excellent roots and stalk, providing top yields under all soil and moisture conditions
91H44 is an early high-oleic variety with downy mildew tolerance. Very high oil and yields in western North Dakota have driven very high grower satisfaction with this hybrid.
Garst Seed Company
The 2008 sunflower hybrid lineup from Garst is similar to that of 2007:
4651NS (97 days to physiological maturity/DPM) is an early season NuSun hybrid with top-end yields. This medium-tall plant boasts excellent standability and offers a great disease package.
4668NS/CL (97 DPM) is an early season Clearfield/NuSun with a first-rate agronomic package. This hybrid offers higher yield and oil than most Clearfield hybrids. It is a great option for the dehull market.
4420NS (102 DPM) is a full-season NuSun hybrid offering excellent rust resistance. With strong stalks and roots, it’s been a top performer in university trials. A “go-to” product for early planting.
4665HO (97 DPM) is an early-mid season high-oleic hybrid with a superb agronomic package. A medium-tall hybrid with good stalk strength, 4665HO can be adapted from north to south.
4596HO (99 DPM) is a new mid-season, high-yielding high-oleic hybrid. This widely adapted hybrid provides very good drydown and drought tolerance.
LSF 223NCL has the latest Clearfield/NuSun technology. It is a medium-tall hybrid suitable for the dehulling market. It has a strong stalk and neck with great resistance to lodging. It’s also resistant to the newest races of downy mildew.
Along with its own products, Legend has a agreement with Triumph Seed of Ralls, Texas, to distribute Triumph hybrids.
Mycogen Seeds announces the addition of four new hybrids to its sunflower lineup, with several protection options, including downy mildew and Clearfield® resistance.
The high-oleic version of the popular Mycogen® brand 8N453DM, 8H449DM is resistant to all known races of downy mildew in the United States. This hybrid has the same agronomic and plant characteristics as 8N453DM.
One of the earliest-maturing Clearfield/NuSun hybrids on the market, 8N358CL provides very good oil content and good yield potential. This hybrid shows good drydown characteristics and is suitable for Northern planting areas with shorter growing seasons.
With excellent hulling properties, 8D480 is a superior full-season NuSun hybrid. This hybrid makes a strong complement to 8D310 in longer-season markets and shows exceptional ability to resist environmental stress.
8C482 is a full-season confection hybrid with superior seed size and seed color. Additionally, this hybrid offers excellent yield potential, plant health and uniformity, which makes it well-suited for the in-shell market.
7813NS — This mid-season maturing hybrid with NuSun characteristics boasts high oil content, excellent standability and very good drydown. It is an industry leader for rust tolerance in the Dakotas.
7924NS — With the NuSun characteristics, the 7924NS is an attractive, medium to medium-tall ’flower that exhibits a high resistance to Verticillium and Sclerotinia. Another industry leader for rust tolerance in the Dakotas.
7568NS — This outstanding medium to tall ’flower featuring NuSun characteristics matures mid- to full season. 7568NS also demonstrates high tolerance to rust with excellent standability and drydown. A top performer.
Pioneer Hi-Bred International
Pioneer Hi-Bred will release two new full-season sunflower hybrids containing the DuPont™ ExpressSun™ herbicide-tolerant trait in 2008. The ExpressSun trait provides tolerance to Express® herbicide with TotalSol™ soluble granules from DuPont.
Not yet named, the first is a mid-oleic hybrid bred for the NuSun oil market with high yield, high oil content and agronomic stability. Key traits include strong stalks and roots, and good tolerance to head Sclerotinia and phomopsis.
The second is a high-oleic hybrid with high yield, high oil and strong agronomics. It has good tolerance to head Sclerotinia and phomopsis, as well as resistance to downy mildew races 1-4.
This unique sunflower system from DuPont Crop Protection and Pioneer is designed to maximize weed control in sunflower crops, improving ease of production and potential yield. It provides improved broadleaf weed control over conventional hybrids with traditional herbicides.
Proseed’s lineup for 2008 is similar to that of 2007: seven hybrids, with two varieties resistant to all forms of downy mildew.
E-85 (E-1) is an early high-yield, downy mildew-resistant, high-oleic hybrid with excellent oil and oleic content. It has a high tolerance to phomopsis and phoma with strong stalk strength.
E-4 is a mid-early variety, downy mildew-resistant, with oleic and oil not quite as high as E-85, but with similar tolerance to phomopsis and phoma and spectacular yield potential.
Red River Commodities
RRC 2215 is a single-cross hybrid with excellent seed size and long seed. It has been a trial plot leader all the way from the Northern to Southern growing regions.
RRC 2216 is a modified single-cross hybrid with excellent seed size and long seed. It has wide adaptability.
RRC 7015 is a single cross with good seed size and long seed. It’s a great hybrid for the longer Southern Plains growing seasons.
RRC2259 is a new hybrid with excellent seed size and length. Limited availability for 2008.
Seeds 2000 continues to offer new sunflower hybrids with advanced technology for 2008 planting.
Jaguar DMR brand is the first stacked technology confection hybrid available to the market, combining both Clearfield herbicide tolerance and genetic resistance to downy mildew. It is a medium-early maturing hybrid that produces very large, long, dark seed preferred by processors.
Firebird (X4744) is a herbicide-tolerant NuSun hybrid with the ExpressSun trait. It is a high-yielding, medium-full maturing hybrid with excellent standability and heavy test weight, making it suitable for bird food markets.
Blazer CL brand is a medium-full season Clearfield/NuSun hybrid producing big yields with high oil content. It is a medium-stature, uniform, single-cross hybrid.
Teton is a medium-early season high-oleic hybrid with genetic resistance to downy mildew. Teton produces a medium-stature plant with semi-erect heads for ease of harvest. It offers improved oil content and oleic levels.
Also available from Seeds 2000 for 2008 planting is an expanded supply of Jaguar brand, the first Clearfield confection hybrid. Over the past two years, Jaguar brand has been a consistent performer for yield and large seed size.
Barracuda brand, a Clearfield/NuSun hybrid, continues to be a steady performer. It is a very uniform hybrid that produces a combination of high yields and high oil content.
Triumph is pleased to introduce the following hybrids for 2008 planting:
R657 is a 95- to 105-day rust-tolerant NuSun with great uniformity and top yields, very good oil content and oleic content. Its heads have good seed fill to the center.
R664 is a 95- to 105-day rust-tolerant NuSun hybrid with reliable yield and oil content, good uniformity, good test weight and consistent field performance.
R859HOCL is a 95- to 110-day high-oleic Clearfield with high rust tolerance, excellent uniformity and good yield potential.
747C is a 95- to 105-day confection with large, long seed, shorter and uniform plant height, and moderate rust resistance.
